I'll start with an old one:
Quote:
An English professor wrote the words, "Woman without her man is nothing" on the blackboard and directed his students to punctuate it correctly.

The men wrote: "Woman, without her man, is nothing."

The women wrote: "Woman! Without her, man is nothing."

And another:
Quote:
Dear John:

I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever happy - will you let me be yours?

Gloria

VS.

Dear John:

I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men, I yearn. For you, I have no feelings whatsoever. When we're apart, I can be forever happy. Will you let me be?

Yours,
Gloria

See the difference punctuation makes? LOL I'd love to see more examples like these, if anyone has them (and they're clean ;))

These are great. It puts me in mind of a legal phrase where a misplaced comma cost the client hundreds of thousands of dollars. I can't remember the phrase unfortunately. But yeah, punctuation does matter.

The Soldier Enters (posted some months ago here) is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, and it was one my mother learned in school, so I heard it now and again while I was growing up.

It was Midnight on the Ocean is in a similar vein, but it cannot make sense under any circumstance, so is not an example of this.

Here is one from our friends in Canada :)

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-o ... 838561.ece

Basically, a misplaced comma allowed Bell Aliant to terminate a 5 year contract with Roger's communication with only a year notice. Rates went from Roger's paying around 9 dollars a pole to them paying 28 dollars a pole to string cable on :)

Wow, Marco, that Aliant-Rogers contract is very sobering. I have a tendency to use too many commas I think, Nearly all the time they are correctly placed, but modern usage has cut down on using commas quite a bit, despite Strunk & White's admonishments. I guess it isn't nearly so important in fiction writing as it is in legal contracts, but it serves the point that incorrect punctuation can stop the reader in confusion and give the wrong message. By extrapolation, it could cost the author money by making the reader throw the book aside as being too difficult to read.

So I suggest that we all mind our P's (periods) and Q's (commas) :P

I heard a story at a company I used to work for (big multi-national). They signed a contract with a European government for $70 million. But they forgot the different styles of writing numbers in America vs. Europe.

American style: $70,000,000.00
European style: $70.000.000,00

(If your font is set too small to make the distinction, the commas and periods are reversed. In America, a period denotes dollars stopping and cents starting. In Europe, the comma denotes same.)

In other words, a contract for 70 million was interpreted as being for 70 dollars. Yes. Seventy. From what I heard, the company went to court about it - and lost. After that, all contracts made sure to write out the amount in words and include legalese that the words took precedence over numbers, if there was a discrepancy.

Holy cow, that would be absolutely devastating!! I just can't imagine being the lawyer who drafted the contract or advised his client to sign. Big damages there!!

One comma, a world of difference:

"Let's eat grandma!"

vs.

"Let's eat, grandma!"
