Don't know about you, but I'm seeing lose / loose mixups all the time, and it's driving me crazy. Let's try to bring some sanity, one post at a time.

Lose (one "o") is the opposite of win. It also means something that is lost. Examples:
If the blue team doesn't play harder, they will lose the match.
Hope I didn't lose that library book, or I'll have to pay a fine.

Loose has more meanings. Rather than bore you with dictionary definitions, try these on for size:
The boat drifted away because the rope was loose.
The crude wooden box held a loose assortment of dusty stones.
Digging holes is easy if the soil is loose.
He scratched his head while trying to decipher the loose directions.

Loose can also mean released or set free.
Robin Hood loosed an arrow, narrowly missing Friar Tuck.
After serving his time, he was loosed from prison.

Other uses of loose (not complete sentences): Loose morals, loose bowels, an animal got loose, fast and loose with the truth, cut loose and party.

There isn't one simple easy rule to determine lose vs. loose. Better to read up on it, use the right word, and not join the legion of losers who cut loose with the wrong word!
