Time to come clean, what's your most embarrassing writing screwup?

Mine: Official report submitted to senior management. First page, bold text, what does it say?

"We have thus shone..."

(excuse me while I crawl under a rock)

Embarrassing, but still funny after all these years...I was writing a mystery novel based solely on my idea that fishing wire could be substituted for piano wire and vice versa, which would become the strangulating murder weapon in the mystery. It was a very convoluted plot with the title "Rhapsody in Blood," which I was particularly proud of.

Problem was, the plot got so convoluted and seemed to take on a life of its own, and so many people were being murdered, that it wasn't until I murdered the best suspect that I realized I had no killer. I had knocked off the one person who was the most likely killer. Unfortunately, I had already written about 35,000 words, and it would require a major rewrite to fix this boo-boo. I never touched the book again, but remembered it as a good reason for me anyhow to always make sure I have a plot outline before I start to write.

For a couple of years afterwards, I would have friends asking how I was coming along with my murder mystery, only to have to confess my oopsie. It was nerve-wracking to listen to the sounds of their unbridled laughter as I hung up the phone.
