Do you use the Oxford comma when writing? I do. I know journalists don't, to save space...but I think the following illustrates why I prefer them:

Not what I want to see late in the evening.

Thanks for posting it though. It was a rather noteworthy example.

Very clever. I thought there was a rule governing whether or not to use a comma before the "and." Your Oxford comma supports the rule that items in a series all need commas after them except the one before the period to avoid undue emphasis on the last pair of items (or something like that). Commas have ALWAYS supposed to have been aids in understanding the written (and spoken) word. They were separators long before HTML required separators, and are still used by email software to separate addressees in a multiple-recipient email.

I have followed Strunk & White's Elements of Style as much as possible and as memory permits for as long as I can remember. At one time it was THE definitive authority on writing the English language.

Yeah, I've always put a comma before the "and" but it's becoming less and less prevalent, it seems. They even call it that special "Oxford comma" name, which makes me sound smarter for using it :P
