Although it's meant to be funny, there's a certain dark truth to that. Britain has conquered many countries, taken words from their languages, and added them to English. These words have added to the strength and directness of our language. It's one of the reasons that English is the language of business and commerce around the world.

As an example of directness...the English word for one of the tuber vegetables is "potato." No beating around the bush...comes right out and says it. Potato.

French, on the other hand and as an example, calls this same tuber vegetable "une pomme de terre," which literally means "an apple of the earth." It's not direct...it beats around the bush. Usage has made it so that French people will think of a potato when they say une pomme de terre, but newcomers to the language will have to guess what it means. Apple? what apple? apples grow on trees, not in the earth...and so on. This is true of many other languages.

The imagery does tend to amuse though.
