I have noticed lately in quite a few manuscripts and writing pieces out there that people are incorrectly using single quotation marks (') around words that they want to punch up or indicate as special words or indicate sarcasm. In nearly all instances, double quotations marks should be used. The MAIN use for single quotation marks is to enclose a direct quote within a quote. Here is an excellent description of what, when and why by the Grammar Girl. Memorize it, writers! :P

As today is apparently National Punctuation Day, there was an amusing article in the local newspaper about the plight of the lowly apostrophe.

It seems the poor fellow is being sorely neglected of late and when not neglected, misused.

I originally used the single quote mark for sign language in Gilded Shadows as I wanted to denote it differently from regular speech. However, in more recent writing I do use the double quote marks & just say they "signed" instead of "said" or something similar (yes, I have several instances of sign languages in my stories, lol).

I already knew about the singles within the doubles rule but I know I was guilty of making up new illegal (omg) uses at other times, too ;)
