Anathem is a speculative fiction novel by Neal Stephenson.

It's honestly very difficult to describe this book because it contains so much and it ended up being so much more than I thought it would be when I picked it up... Ostensibly it is a coming of age story, culture clash, philosophy and adventure.

The action revolves around a group of Avout, basically monks that have dedicated their lives to the study of philosophy, science, math, astronomy... being smart, and their culture and lives.

The most impressive thing about this book, aside from the wonderful characters, thrilling action and its well wrought story is the world building that goes on within these pages. Anathem is easily the most stunning feat of world building I've ever witnessed. It sucks you in, and because the world is so authentic you care that much more for the people within.

It's a long book, and it takes its time. The action, it would seem, is in no hurry to get started, but that isn't true because all that time before the meat and potatoes of the action is important and well worth the time it takes to read it and enjoy it for the world that is being created. The first few hundred pages are a foundation the rest of the story sits, it's important that it is sturdy.

I just finished it moments ago and I'm blown away by the craft that went into this novel.

Astounding.

I have heard good things from others about his work. And I'll need something new on my Kindle soon, too ;)
