One, my all time favorite, is called Pawn's Dream, by Eric Nylund. Apparently the system of magic he uses is not his original idea, but it's still brilliant. The story is about a young man name Roland, who has a horrible life. He is a gas station attendant, his mother is insane (so he has to care for her), his father abandoned him a long time ago, and his life is dull and depressing all around. But when he falls asleep, he dreams of a fantasy realm, with magic and demons.

But he eventually discovers that his dreams are real; when he falls asleep, he travels to this magical world, and when he goes to sleep in that world, he wakes up on Earth. And, to top it all off, he's not the only one who can do this!

The other book, which may have been mentioned by someone else (I heard talk of Piers Anthony fans here) is Demons Don't Dream. Excellent, clever, addictive. 'Nuff said.

Pawn's Dream sounds interesting - another one to add to my growing list.

Is Demons Don't Dream one of the Xanth series? Because the Xanth series is the only series of Anthony's that I like. I found his other ones too intellectual and introvertive.

I'm not sure if it's a Xanth book. It was about two kids who both get this computer game. It sucks them in (literally), and they enter a world of lots of puns. That's what I remember. It was a long time ago that I read it. Maybe Amazon.com can tell you, or better yet, look for Anthony's site.

The first one sounds interesting, and not an author I am familiar with, which is unusual.

I believe Demons Don't Dream is a Xanth derivitive, so unfortunately not one I am interested in.

If you don't want to hear about the system of magic used in Pawn's Dream until you read it yourself, then don't read this comment.

The way it works is a balance of opposites. You are a master of earth? Well then you need to know how to control the element of wind. The more power you feed into creating an earthquake, the harder it is to stop a devastating tornado from kicking up. It's very interesting. And it's a cool idea (one I may employ in future stories) that ANY pair can be used. It doesn't have to be a pair of physical forces...
